TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL Food/Toy Drives
1. Before you copy and distribute your flyer, add a contact name and number in the space provided. This can be your Food Drive chairman; your PTA president; your school secretary. Parents may have questions and/or want to help. Let them know whom to call.
2. Arrange with your principal for a central location at the school where food can be collected as it comes in. A corner of the school cafeteria or auditorium not otherwise in use that week is one possibility. If security is a potential issue at your school, try for a more secure location.
3. Ask local grocery stores, supermarkets and other neighborhood businesses if they will support the Food Drive by donating used cardboard boxes they otherwise would recycle. You will need these boxes to pack up the food donations so they can be transported to the Salvation Army.
4. Use your school marquee, bulletin boards in the hallways, etc., to publicize your event. Extra copies of the event flyer printed on bright paper make easy posters. If you have a moveable marquee or message board, put it right on the curb next to your drop off/pick up lane and update messages throughout the week.
Examples:
"Family Food Drive starts today!"
"Food Drive underway now! Please give generously!"
"Tomorrow is the last day to bring in food items" etc.
5. If you have a dedicated drop off/pick up lane in front of your school, have volunteers on the curb at drop off time in the morning to take food donations directly from the cars. That way the potential obstacle of trying to find a place to park so you can bring in heavy bags and/or items is removed.
6. Ask your principal to ask the teachers to "talk it up" in the classroom. Their enthusiasm will help interest and motivate the students to talk to their families about helping out. We know that when teachers "talk up" PTA membership; fund raising projects; any school activity in their classrooms, the percentage of students/families participating is higher.
7. Involve your students as much as possible. For example, student council officers, pep squads, etc., can assist supervising adults in sorting food by type of item, packing boxes, etc. Your principal probably will have some ideas on how to do this most effectively.
8. Please arrange for food pick up date and time in ADVANCE (once you begin planning your participation) by contacting Rick White of Salvation Army at
